5 Ways to Revitalize Your Energy!

One of the things which often surprise people who are making positive changes to their lifestyle is the unexpected resurgence of energy that had dwindled away. In the many years that I have been teaching, speaking, and motivating, I have seen countless individuals regain their energy levels… to their astonishment and delight.  

Reset Your Circadian Rhythm  

We get “out of sync” with the natural rhythms that regulate our sleeping, waking, and cortisol levels. Living on “second winds” by staying up and pushing past the tiredness does give us energy for a time, but it is borrowed. Cortisol should be naturally high in the morning, allowing us to wake up refreshed, ready to meet the day. Gradually throughout the day, it decreases until it is at its lowest in the evening. Making excess cortisol at night means we have borrowed energy from tomorrow, undermining the vitality we need for our daytime activities.  

In the darkness of evening, we make melatonin… our sleep hormone. But we cannot make melatonin in the presence of the high cortisol associated with second winds. When we are ready to go to sleep, we cannot. The quality of our sleep is affected and we do not awake refreshed.  

A third key to resetting your circadian rhythm is to spend time outside in the sunlight, especially in the morning.  This turns off melatonin production and turns on serotonin, which makes us feel happy and satisfied, ready to meet the demands of the day.  

Right Fats  
That’s right… fats! But not just any fats. Our cell membranes are made of fats and the type of fats we consume makes an astonishing difference to intercellular communication, hormonal messages, insulin sensitivity or resistance, nutrient assimilation, energy production and detoxification.
