Lemon Eucalyptus, aka Lemon-scented Gum, is a highly fragrant tree that has green, lance-shaped leaves and a smooth, grey bark. It has been popularised in recent years due to the highly effective insect repellent qualities of its refined extract, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE). Besides this utility, it also makes a lovely ornamental. It can be grown as an annual in the garden or in containers as it is frost-tender and best moved indoors over winter. This fast growing, deer resistant tree can reach 1.8-2.4m (6-8') in its first season--in its natural environment in Australia, these trees can grow 12-30m (40-100') tall at full maturity! Thankfully, container plants can be pruned to keep them at a more manageable size.
Tender Perennial
Germination Note: Eucalyptus seeds take about 21 days to sprout at 18–24°C (65–75°F). They require patience and precise conditions, making them best for experienced growers.
