As the leaves turn gold, October marks a special time in the year. But not just for the return of pumpkin spice lattes. October is also Fairtrade Month, where retailers and brands around the world celebrate ethically sourced products and produce. This Fairtrade Month, we’re spotlighting Equifruit, our Fairtrade banana partner who stocks the Goodness Me! fruit aisle with delicious Fairtrade organic bananas. Together, we’re driving positive impact for banana farmers in Latin America.
Equifruit is a women-owned, B Corp certified banana importer. Since 2006, Equifruit has been on a mission to right the wrongs of the traditional banana industry, with a 100% Fairtrade commitment, meaning they exclusively import Fairtrade-certified bananas, and they pay banana farmers fairly for their fruit.
Fairtrade is the world’s most trusted ethical food certification, designed to make trade fairer for the people who grow and produce our food. You can identify Fairtrade products by the Fairtrade label on the packaging.
The Fairtrade label on Equifruit Fairtrade organic bananas
Equifruit bananas are grown by Fairtrade-certified banana farmers in Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. The Fairtrade Standards have clear requirements about how much banana farmers are paid for their fruit, which must be at least the Minimum Price set independently by Fairtrade International. This Minimum Price is calculated to account for
decent incomes, the cost of sustainable production, improved working conditions and environmentally friendly farming practices. The Minimum Price means that farmers can count on a reliable income, rather than navigating the volatile non-Fairtrade banana market prices, where banana pricing can change dramatically from week to week.
On top of the Fairtrade Minimum Price, every Equifruit Fairtrade banana sold in North America also contributes to a Fairtrade Premium, paid directly by Equifruit to banana growers. The Fairtrade Premium is set by Fairtrade International at $1 US per case of bananas. Banana growers spend the Fairtrade Premium on community, environmental and economic projects of their choosing, which contribute to improving their lives and livelihoods.
Every year, Goodness Me! shoppers help to generate approximately $6,300 for banana farmers, just by purchasing Equifruit bananas. This Fairtrade Month, we are proud to celebrate our customers who are helping to improve the lives of banana farmers through their shopping choices.
“We’re proud to partner with Goodness Me! to offer customers across Ontario Fairtrade organic bananas that not only taste delicious, but deliver real change for banana farmers,” says Jennie Coleman, President and Co-owner of Equifruit. “Every Equifruit banana purchased at Goodness Me! is a step towards a more ethical banana trade everywhere.”
So, this Fairtrade Month, stop by the fruit aisle and pick up a bunch of Equifruit Fairtrade organic bananas. Remember, you’re not just buying a healthy and delicious snack, you’re also helping to create a fairer food system for banana farmers.
