Now that the days are getting longer and the sun is getting brighter, we all probably have one thing on our minds: lounging on a beach, relaxing, not a care in the world. Sound like paradise? But when you’re sitting at work or in class and your mind starts to wander to distant horizons and palm trees, try to remember one other important part of summer – exercise.
Though it might be the last thing on your mind as the weather warms up, the summer makes it easier than ever to get active. The warm weather makes all kinds of activities enjoyable and easy. Try going for a half hour walk in the morning as the sun warms the day and the birds are singing, or at dusk when sunset sets the sky ablaze with different colours. Take advantage of trails and woodlands for beautiful scenery and biking destinations. Break out the rollerblades and head down to the waterfront. Grab a friend and jog around your neighbourhood. It doesn’t have to be terribly hard or strenuous, it just has to be something!
For the more ambitious, there are a number of great workout programs and “bootcamps” that take place outside in the summer months. Sign up with a friend or two and get moving – much more enjoyable than being inside! There are also many recreational sports for all ages that run through the summer, offering exercise, fun, and relationship building. Or if you missed registration for organized teams, get some friends or family together for an ongoing league of your own. If you’re a dedicated (or WANT to be a dedicated) runner, check out the upcoming complimentary class Nutrition for Runners on June 29th at Goodness Me! Upper Gage. It offers great healthy tips and motivation for people from all walks of life! Find more information on the online calender, and register today.
Beach volleyball, biking to or from work, walking a few blocks on your lunch – the possibilities are endless. Try to get your blood pumping and aim to break a sweat every day – you’ll feel energized, refreshed, and motivated in no time. And don’t forget about nutrition – fresh produce and protein smoothies make perfect light meals and snacks in the hot summer weather. Check out Goodness Me!’s online recipe section for some delicious ideas. Whatever your choice or preference, just be sure to get out there and get moving!
